Cox's Bazar Armed Police Battalion demands arrest of alleged instigator of Rohingya leader Muhibullah's assassination
The Armed Police Battalion (APBN) has arrested Maulvi Zakoria, 55, accused in the murder case of Muhibullah, a top Rohingya leader in Cox's Bazar district of Bangladesh. They claim that the arrested Zakoria Muhibullah was one of the instigators of the assassination and the commander-in-chief of the Ulema branch of the Arakan Salvation Army (ARSA), an armed group in Myanmar. He is a resident of D-block of Kutupalong (Camp-1 West) shelter camp in Ukhia.
APBN raided the shelter on Sunday (March 8) morning and arrested Zakoria. He was handed over to Ukhia police station at noon. 14 APBN Battalion Commander and Superintendent of Police. A press release signed by Naimul Haque confirmed its authenticity. He is currently out of the country.
According to the press release, Maulvi Zakaria fled from Rakhine State in Myanmar in 2015 and took refuge in Ukhia and returned to Myanmar a few months later. After 25 August 2016, he fled to Bangladesh with Rohingya people and started living in Umbia's Lombasia Shelter. In 2019, he was given the responsibility of the fatwa department of the Ulema branch of Arsar. He has been the Commander-in-Chief of the Ulema Branch in the Kutupalong Camp area of Arsar since 2020.
Kutupalong camp boatman (Rohingya leader) Hamid Hossain told VOA that about 900,000 Rohingya are living in 23 shelters in Ukhia. About 300 madrasas and maktabs have been established in the camps for the religious education of Rohingya children and adolescents. These madrasas are run with foreign grants. Most of the madrasas and maktabs are run under the leadership of Arsa Ulama Parishad branch. But with the help of this money, looting took place. There was a dispute between the pro-Muhibullah group, ordinary Rohingya and Rohingya clerics.
According to police and Rohingya leaders, Muhibullah, 48, was shot dead by gunmen at the Lambasia camp in Ukhia on the night of September 29, 2021. He was chairman of the Arakan Rohingya Society for Peace and Human Rights (ARSPH). The next day, on September 30, Muhibullah's younger brother Habibullah filed a murder case against the unidentified terrorists at Ukhia police station. After the incident, Habibullah said, 19 Rohingya terrorists led by Arsa commander Abdur Rahim shot dead Muhibullah four times in a row and fled.

Among them, 12 accused in the case, including four directly involved in Muhibullah's murder, have been arrested. The Cox's Bazar Judicial Magistrate has also given a confessional statement under section 164 in the court, pleading guilty to the four charges of arrest. The commander of the Ursa branch of Arsar was arrested last. "
Naimul Haque further said, “Arsa leader Shah Ali (55) was arrested along with weapons, drugs and cash in a raid on a dormitory in the boat field area of Kutupalong camp in Ukhia on the morning of January 18. He is the brother of Arsa chief Ataullah. Shah Ali used to control 10-12 terrorist groups of Rohingyas hiding in the camp. Shah Ali has been sent to jail after seven days of police remand. ”
Ahmed Sanjur Morshed, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Ukhia Police Station, told Voice of America that all the 12 arrested persons are lodged in Cox's Bazar District Jail. Several other terrorists directly involved in Muhibullah's assassination have fled the camp and fled to Myanmar. If they had been caught, the masterminds behind Muhibullah's assassination could have been identified. "
It may be mentioned that Muhibullah met with the then President Donald Trump on July 16, 2019 at the White House, the official office and residence of the President of the United States, as a representative of the minority community of 18 countries. During the meeting with the US President, Muhibullah said, "We (Rohingyas) want to return to Myanmar as soon as possible. The Rohingya people want US help in this regard. "
Shortly after the meeting, on August 25, 2019, Muhibullah organized a mass rally on the day of "Genocide" by gathering hundreds of thousands of Rohingyas at the football field of Kutupalong camp in Ukhia. At the rally, Muhibullah called on Myanmar to accept the seven-point demand, including granting citizenship and security to the Rohingya and returning the birthplace left behind in Rakhine.
