Fighting continues between Ukrainian and Russian troops over the occupation of Kiev
On Sunday, Russian troops continued to fight with Ukrainian defense forces and civilian fighters in a bid to gain control of other cities, including the Ukrainian capital Kiev. This is the fourth day of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
Russian troops entered Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-largest city, on Sunday. They have to face strong resistance there.
Ukraine's top prosecutor, Irina Venediktova, said Russian forces had failed to capture Kharkiv. The city is located just 40 kilometers from the Russian border. The Associated Press (AP) reports that he says there is a fierce battle going on.
Earlier on Sunday, the Ukrainian president's office said there had been an explosion in Kharkiv and that Russian forces had blown up a gas connection pipe.
The epicenter was reported below the Pacific Ocean floor, however; no tsunami alert was issued.
Heavy shelling was also reported in the eastern Ukrainian city of Donetsk. The city has been under the control of Russian-backed separatists since 2014.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said he agrees to sit down for peace talks with Russia. However, he ruled out talks with the Russian delegation in Belarus. Russia has already sent officials to Belarus for talks.
Zelensky said Belarus was not an acceptable place for talks because Russia had used Belarusian territory to invade Ukraine.
Western allies, on the other hand, are responding to Zelensky's appeal for help. On Saturday, German Chancellor Olaf Schulz said the country would send 1,000 anti-tank weapons and 500 surface-to-air Stinger missiles to Ukraine "as soon as possible." The French president's office said France would send defensive weapons and fuel.
At the same time, Ukraine's foreign minister issued a statement on Twitter inviting foreign nationals to join Ukraine's war against Russia.
