The head of the Khulna division of the banned militant organization JMB has been sentenced to 20 years in prison

Ziaur Rahman, the Khulna division chief of the banned militant group Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), has been sentenced by a court to 20 years rigorous imprisonment in an explosives case. At the same time, he was fined Tk 20,000 and given another 6 months rigorous imprisonment for non-payment.
Judge SM Ashikur Rahman of the Khulna Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court pronounced the verdict on Monday (February 26th). Convicted Ziaur Rahman was present in the court when the verdict was announced.
The court's lawyer Kazi Sabbir Ahmed has confirmed the matter.
The convict is Ziaur Rahman alias Sagar alias Sabbir, son of Gedu Molla alias Gedu Mistri of Mairkhola area of Baghatipara sub-district of Natore district.
According to court sources, Ziaur Rahman was arrested by the law enforcement forces from Umiyapara on December 29, 2005 at around 12:15 pm. At one point during the interrogation, he confessed to being associated with the militants. A large quantity of explosives was recovered from one of the rooms of Raibaragipara Jessore dormitory under Daulatpur police station.
On December 30, Daulatpur police station filed a case against him under the Explosives Act. He later made a confessional statement in court. On January 19, 2006, Daulatpur Police Station SI Jahidul Haque Sarkar filed an indictment against him. The court gave its verdict today after taking testimony of 13 people.
