"We want peace, not war" - Bangladesh Foreign Minister Abdul Momen in response to a question about Ukraine

Foreign Minister of Bangladesh AK Abdul Momen said, "We want peace and dialogue through diplomatic means to resolve (the Ukraine crisis)."

He made the remarks at a press conference at the state guest house Padma on Sunday (March 8).

Asked by reporters why Bangladesh abstained from voting on the Ukraine issue at the UN, Abdul Momen explained Bangladesh's position, "Bangladesh wants peace, not war."

Bangladesh was among the 35 countries that abstained from voting on a resolution in the UN General Assembly recently.

"Bangladesh has said that it is deeply concerned about the recent escalation of violence in Ukraine and that such violence will seriously affect the peace and stability of the entire region," he said. Bangladesh called on all parties to exercise maximum restraint, end hostilities and return to diplomacy and dialogue to resolve the crisis. ”

Asked if there was any change in Bangladesh's position on the Ukraine issue, he said, "The position remains unchanged."

Abdul Momen added, "If there is any instability anywhere, Bangladesh will be in trouble like any other country."

Attempts are being made to bring Hadisur's body back to the country

At the press conference, Abdul Momen said, the engineer of the Bengal Prosperity Ship killed in the rocket attack. Hadisur Rahman's body has been preserved in Ukraine. Attempts are being made to bring his body back to the country.

"The body has been kept in a safe place in Ukraine. It may take time to bring it to Bangladesh," he said.

Abdul Momen further said, “26 crew members of Bangladeshi ship Bengal Prosperity are now in Bucharest, Romania. They have been staying at a hotel there since last night. ”

Earlier, the third engineer of the prosperity of Bengal, Md. Hadisur Rahman (48) was killed.

Another 27 crew members from war-torn Ukraine have arrived safely in Romania and will return home soon.

Meanwhile, the Russian embassy in Dhaka on Thursday expressed deep condolences to the loved ones of the slain Hadisur Rahman, saying the Russian side was "continuing all efforts" to ensure the safe return of Bangladeshi ships from the port.

Five in the detention center

Speaking at a press conference, Foreign Minister Abdul Momen said in a video posted by five Bangladeshis that they were gathering information.

"All we know so far is that they went to Russia to watch the game and planned to leave Russia," he said.

Abdul Momen said, “The Ukrainian government detained them as illegal immigrants. Later they were kept in the detention center. They are still there (detention center). We are trying to get more information. We will start our efforts to bring them back as soon as we get more information. ”

Earlier on Saturday, the foreign minister said that they had found out about them by watching the video.

Abdul Momen said, "We have talked to our ambassador in charge. We are trying to take their information and save their statements. Because they claim that the Ukrainian government has forcibly placed them there as human shields. "
