A two-month government ban on catching, selling, stocking and transporting hilsa to boost hilsa production in Bangladesh began on Tuesday (March 1).

Under the ban, all types of fishing including hilsa will be banned in the rivers of Barisal, Chandpur, Laxmipur, Bhola, Shariatpur and Patuakhali districts.

In the next two months, 100 km of the lower basin of Meghna river from Shatnal in Chandpur district to Char Alexander in Laxmipur district; 90 km area of ​​Shahbazpur tributary of Meghna river from Madanpur / Char Ilisha to Char Pial in Bhola district; About 100 km of river Tetulia from Veduria in Bhola district to Char Rustam in Patuakhali district; Naria and Vedharganj upazilas of Shariatpur district; Fishing will be stopped in 20 km area of ​​Padma river in Matlab upazila of Chandpur district and about 62 km area of ​​Kalabadar, Gazaria and Meghna rivers of Hijla, Medendiganj and Sadar upazilas of Barisal district.

In these five sanctuaries, all kinds of fishing including hilsa and jatka are completely banned for two months from March to April every year.

Violators are liable to a minimum of one year to a maximum of two years rigorous imprisonment or a fine of up to five thousand rupees or both.

The Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock has already allotted 60 kg of VGF rice to the registered fishermen who are refraining from fishing in the sanctuary districts at this time.
