The United Nations and other humanitarian agencies in Malawi have made an urgent request for আগামী 29.4 million over the next three months to help those affected by Hurricane Anna. A UN team in Malawi said on Friday that about 680,000 people in the six worst-affected districts needed humanitarian assistance and protection.

The tropical storm, Anna, which hit Madagascar, Mozambique and Zimbabwe, swept through several cities in southern Malawi at the end of January, leaving thousands homeless.

Forty-four organizations, including the Malawi Red Cross, have appealed for help, including eight state-run NGOs, 26 international organizations and 10 UN agencies.

Shigeki Komatsubara is the UN Resident Coordinator in Malawi. He said
"In Malawi, we, the UN team, have worked tirelessly to make this request a priority and to ensure its policy, and we are committed to providing immediate assistance to those most in need.

The government estimates that 990,000 people have been affected in 28 of the country's 27 districts.

The UN agency said the six worst-hit cities, such as Chikwawa, Nasanje, Falambe, Mulanje, Chiradzulu and Balaka, where an estimated 860,000 people live, needed humanitarian assistance and protection.

A number of UN agencies and organizations, including UNICEF, the United Nations, Women, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, and the World Food Program, have already stepped in to help the victims, especially in the camps where the rescued are living.

Flood-hit Jakina Lamik said they now need blankets, cooking utensils, food and even money, with which they can shop, which is not available in the camp. The UN agency said it welcomed the assistance already provided by the international community in response to the tropical storm.

This includes ৩০ 3 million from the United Nations Central Emergency Relief Fund for humanitarian assistance to Kenya Malawi.
