Novaya Gazeta is a leading independent Russian newspaper. The newspaper suspended its activities last month after receiving warnings from Russian authorities.

According to the newspaper, Roscommonadzor warned them twice. This meant that the state communications regulator sought to shut down their independent outlet through legal action.

Russia has set strict limits on how the media can describe the war that Moscow has started in Ukraine. According to the country's regulatory body, the media must follow the rules of the state media for a "special military operation" described by Moscow. The use of the word "war" or "attack" in Ukraine is prohibited.

Several other Russian media outlets have already decided to suspend their activities due to strict restrictions on what they can report on. The Kremlin has blocked several foreign news outlets, including RFE / RL.
